Sovereignty in the Golan Heights: Netanyahu’s bureau responds to senior US official

“The Golan Heights will forever remain part of the State of Israel,” the Prime Minister’s Office said today (Tuesday), in response to the refusal of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinkan to recognize Israeli sovereignty in the Golan Heights. Netanyahu’s spokesman added: “Israel’s position on the issue is clear – the Golan Heights will remain Israeli in every possible scenario.”

Blinken was interviewed by CNN during the night and said that “control of the Golan Heights in the current situation is of real importance to Israel’s security. However, legal questions about the right to land are something else, and should be examined over time if the situation changes in Syria.” According to Blinken, Bashar Assad’s rule in Syria and the presence of Iranian militias in its territory pose a “significant security threat” to Israel.

In addition, Blinken reiterated the Biden administration’s commitment to keep the United States Embassy in Jerusalem, after the Trump administration recognized the city as the capital of Israel, and reversed previous policy on the issue.

In March 2019, Trump expressed his support for Israel and its security and signed an order recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights during a meeting with Netanyahu at the White House.
