South African coronavirus cases close to 1.5M

ANKARA

South Africa recorded 318 new deaths from the coronavirus, bringing its death toll to 43,951, health officials said Saturday.

The country has tested more than 8.2 million tests for the virus with nearly 1.5 million infections. Nearly 1.3 million patients have recovered.

South Africa is currently battling a second wave of the pandemic. The continent has the highest number of diseases and deaths and is the fifth most affected country in the world.

They reported that the COVID-19 transformer was deploying faster than before and several countries, including Turkey, have suspended flights to South Africa.

Africa’s most developed economy is currently struggling with a new version that is said to be 50% more contagious and has been found in at least 20 countries.

Since its outbreak in December 2019, the pandemic has claimed more than 2 million lives in 192 countries and regions, according to U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University.

More than 99 million cases have been reported and more than 55 million recover worldwide.
