Some snails disable themselves and grow their bodies back- Technology News, Firstpost

Scientists have discovered the final issue of regeneration: Some sea snails can completely rejuvenate new hearts and bodies. This “wonder of nature,” reported in Monday’s journal of biology, could ultimately help scientists better understand and regenerate human tension. Biology researcher Sayaka Mitoh said she enjoys studying Japanese sea snails because they are small, delicate and strange. They can even take short pictures as a plant draws food from the sun.

Wonder nature: Some sea snails decapitate themselves and grow their bodies back

According to a study published in the journal Current Biology on Monday, March 8, 2021, scientists have discovered that some Japanese sea snails can grow whole new bodies if their heads are cut off, which bringing recovery to the most remote levels ever seen. Image credit: Sayaka Mitoh via AP

One day in the lab, she saw something strange: A sea snail had become extinct and her head kept moving and living. An additional couple then did the same, according to a study in Conventional biology.

So Nara Yoichi Yusa Women’s University doctoral student and professor of aquatic ecology tested themselves, cutting off the heads off 16 sea snails. Six of the creatures began to regenerate, with three thriving and surviving. One of the three lost even and put his body back twice. Two different species of sea snails performed this regenerative trick.

Other creatures can throw off body parts when needed, such as when some lizards release their tails to get away from a predator, in a biological phenomenon called autotomy.

“We think this is the real case of autotomy,” Yusa said. “Some animals can automate the legs or tails or tails, but no other animal shears the whole body.”

Scientists thought that such a large animal – one of the sea snail species growing to 15 centimeters in length – that they could not live without a heart to pump blood and nutrients to the brain, said bio- Canadian marine expert Susan Anthony, who was not involved in the study.

But perhaps the one thing that makes this genre amazing is the one that helps it take the trick off, Anthony and Yusa said.

When these sea snails eat a certain type of algae they can clear their food from sunlight and oxygen, just like a plant, for about 10 days, Yusa said. Perhaps what happens after decapitation is that the head type acts like a plant, he said. It turns a green shade and gets its energy from oxygen and sunlight. The fact that it grows tiny helps, he said.

These species may have developed the feat as a way to fight parasites, Mitoh and Yusa said.

Humans may be able to learn something useful from the sea creatures, several scientists have said. What is particularly interesting is that these sea snails are more complex than flat worms or other species known for regeneration, Nicholas Curtis, a professor of biology at Ave Maria University, said the part of the study.

“Of course, it’s a marvel of nature, but understanding the molecular mechanisms involved could help us understand how our cells and cigarettes can be used to destroy damage. Repair, ”Curtis said in an email.
