Sold: The home of Frank Lloyd Wright with a waterfall

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater is not the only home the architect designed to include a waterfall. In the years before Wright’s death in 1959, he designed Tirranna, a U-shaped residence in New Canaan, Connecticut. (The name “Tirranna” is an Aboriginal Australian word meaning “running water.”) The house next to a pond is fed by the nearby Noroton River and overlooks a small waterfall. Experts say this is one of about 400 of Wright ‘s remaining jobs in America – and now, it can be with a fan who is willing to spend just over $ 7 million. search for a piece of architectural history.

Tirran’s most recent owners were Ted Stanley, a philanthropist and entrepreneur, and his wife Vada, according to The Wall Street Journal. The pair bought the home about 20 years ago, but Vada Stanley died in 2013, and Ted Stanley last year. In January, the home was listed for $ 8 million. It’s still on the market, so their retailers have called for the price to drop to $ 7.2 million.

Tirranna has seven bedrooms and is covered by 15 acres of woodland. In addition to the pond and waterfall, the gardens include gardens designed by Frank Okamura, landscape architect of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden; tennis court; barn and stable; swimming pool; greenhouse; guest house; and workshop.

The home itself has been renovated, but still retains all the style marks of a dwelling designed by Frank Lloyd Wright: gold leaf covered chimneys, skylights, built-in bookshelves, and a roof-to-ceiling glass window that provides panoramic views of the surrounding woodland. Initially, there was Wright – designed furniture, but much of the furniture was sold by previous owners, so the Stanleys guaranteed refills after they bought the property.
