Sinitsina and Katsalapov win first ice skating title at world skating competitions

Sinitsina / Katsalapov won without four-time and Papadakis / Cizeron camps. Canadians Gilles and Poirier take their first world medal, earning bronze.

The new world heroes are in ice dancing.

Short dance heads Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov guide them through the free dance to win their first world title, keeping a cheerful field in control of ice dancing at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Stockholm, Sweden, Saturday (March 27).

Two-time world winners Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue they added a third world medal to their CV, capturing the coin.

The Canadian duo of Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier they landed on the world podium for the first time in their career, earning a massive 130.98 in the free dance, four points over their previous personal best.

Sinitsina / Katsalapov won by 221.17 points, Hubbell / Donohue then outscoring the Canadians, 214.71 to 214.35.

Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates he fell from third place to finish fourth, however, and Sinitsina / Katsalapov’s Russian Skating Federation (FSR) Figure teammates Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin placed fifth.

Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri Italy finished sixth.

Sinitsina and Katsalapov were close to speech after winning.

“Really right now I have no idea what to say,” Katsalapov said breathlessly after the win. “I left it all behind, I’m completely empty.”

This is the first time a Russian ice dance team has won a world championship since 2009, when Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin took gold.

Four-time world championships and ruling Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron he opted out of the event, citing a lack of training during the Covid-19 pandemic.
