Signal could make migration easier and safer

Signal is a popular instant messaging app right now, but it lacks features compared to competitors like Telegram and WhatsApp. One of these features is the ability to transfer your Signal account to another device. Currently, Signal users have to go through several steps to do this, including local backup, move the backup file to another device and then use the file to back up the data to bring them back.

However, a new report from TestingCatalogue suggests that Signal could implement a new feature to make the backup and migration process much more convenient. This will help the app navigate with apps like WhatsApp, which offers an easy way to transfer between devices.

“Your next update deserves an update. Quickly and securely transfer your Signals information to a modern Android phone. Use the end-to-end encrypted migration feature to transfer your account and messages from an old device to a new device over a local private Wi-Fi Direct connection. ”

The new feature will still implement end-to-end encryption for your backup files, and in the usual fashion of Signal, this will be a more secure way to backup and transfer your data to another device. If you are part of the Signal beta program, you should see the new ‘Transfer Account’ feature within the Signal Options under the ‘Chats’ section.

To use the new feature to transfer your Signal account to a new device, tap the Transfer Account button. Proceed by selecting Transfer from Android device when prompted and tap on ‘Continue’. This will transfer your account to the new device.

The feature uses Wi-Fi Direct to migrate accounts so you need to keep both the new and old devices nearby. The new feature should soon come to Signal’s stable version account as well.
