Seven West Media Australia is striking a partnership with Google

(Reuters) – Seven West Media Ltd in Australia on Monday said it had entered into an original contract to form a long-term partnership with Google Alphabet Inc to provide content for the tech company’s News Showcase product.

Google launched its News Showcase platform in Australia earlier this month, where it is seen breaking its own content contracts with publishers and paying seven domestic outlets to use their content .

The launch of the product is Google’s latest innovation in a campaign against Australian government-designed legislation to force the company to pay publishers and broadcasters for content that appears in their search engine.

The legislation, which Google previously called “inoperable”, will be introduced by the Australian parliament this week.

Seven Western Media Chairman Kerry Stokes said in a statement that the proposed bill had allowed the company to “conclude a negotiation that will result in a fair payment” and ensure “time to digital coming ”.

No financial terms have been disclosed. The company said its agreement with Google would depend on a long-form agreement executed within the next 30 days.
