WASHINGTON

U.S. children’s television show Sesame Street has announced plans to create their first Rohingya Muppets in an effort to help children suffering from mobility.

The Muppets will be a 6-year-old couple Noor and Aziz, and will be part of Rohingya’s Play to Learn program.

The Play to Learn program seeks to deliver early education content to children living in Cox’s Bazar, the world’s largest refugee camp, home to some 800,000 Rohingya refugees, according to Sesame Street statement released Wednesday.

Nearly half of the people living in the camp based in Bangladesh are children.

“Noor and Aziz are at the heart of our efforts to deliver early education and learning through play to children and carers affected by the Rohingya refugee crisis, which has been severely affected by the dual crisis of mobility and COVID-19 pandemic disease, “said Sherrie Westin, president of Sesame Street social impact.

“These are two very special Sesame Muppets – for most Rohingya children, Noor and Aziz are the first characters in the media who look and feel like them. Rooted in a rich culture Rohingya and informed by extensive research and input from Rohingya families, Noor and Aziz will bring the transformative power of fun learning to families at a time when more is needed than ever before, ”she said.

Noor and Aziz feature main streets ialongside Sesame Street featuring Elmo and Elmo’s father, Louie.
