Children’s TV show Sesame Street have unveiled their first Rohingya Muppets to help thousands of refugee children overcome trauma and deal with the effects of the pandemic in the world’s largest refugee settlement in Bangladesh.
Six-year-old couple Noor and Aziz Yasmin will appear alongside the show’s famous characters such as Elmo and Louie in educational videos in the Rohingya language in the camps, according to Sesame Workshop, the non-profit group that has the back of the show.
“Noor and Aziz are at the heart of our efforts to provide early education … to children and carers … who are deeply affected by the dual emergencies of COVID-19 transmission and epidemic,” Sherrie Westin, president of social impact at Sesame Workshop, said in a statement.
“For most Rohingya children, Noor and Aziz are the first media characters to look and feel like them … (they bring) the transformative power of fun learning to families at a time when more is needed than ever before. “
According to DA figures, children make up more than half of about 730,000 Rohingya who arrived in Bangladesh in 2017 after a mass exodus from Myanmar and who now live in camps in Bazar Cox.

Earlier this year aid groups said the risks posed by child marriage and trafficking had increased in the camps as the pandemic disrupted camp activity and closed youth services. .
Sesame Workshop described Noor as a passionate and inquisitive girl who loves to make up new funny rules for games, while her brother is a storyteller whose creativity can, at times, draw from his daily activities.
The Bangladeshi NGO, BRAC, the program partner, said the video segments would begin “soon”.
“This will definitely help Rohingya children to connect with their roots,” BRAC spokeswoman Hasina Akhter said.
