Sergio Ramos will fill Real Madrid’s 101st goal in the Champions League case

A goal defender is something valuable and something every team would be happy to have.

While keeping goals out of their own net is the main goal, getting in with a few at the other end is definitely a welcome incentive.

And Real Madrid boast one of the best goal defenders in the history of the beautiful game.

Sergio Ramos scored his Real Madrid 101st goal on Tuesday, scoring his 101st goal for Los Blancos in their last-16 Champions League clash against Atalanta.

No other defender currently playing boasts a better goal record than Ramos – whom football fans around the world respect and love.

And, surprisingly, Ramos doesn’t seem to be slowing down so he’s sure to continue to add to his impressive streak of 128 club and country career goals.

But what other football legends are joining Ramos among the best defenders in the history of the sport?

TalkSPORT.com has taken a look at where the Bernabeu legend features among the highest-scoring defenders ever.

10. Franz Beckenbauer goals – (109)

The West Germany captain transformed the sweeping spot, and the fact that he is the player furthest from the opponents ’goal speaks volumes of his abilities.

He was known for his creativity and passing as well as his elite defensive skills.

Over 19 years, he received 109 times.

He was very fertile for Bayern Munich where he scored 64 goals in 439 appearances.

9. Roberto Carlos (113)

The signer is said to be one of the greatest free-kickers ever, Carlos as one of the full-backs who attacked the game.

The Brazilian was part of the ‘Galacticos’ squad that became famous in the early 2000s and became famous for his ability to advance from the sidelines to goal-scoring positions.

He was also lethal at set pieces for club and country with most of his strikes coming from dead balls.

It’s hard to imagine many football players in history who had a more lethal left foot.

8: Paul Breitner – (113)

Like Beckenbauer, Breitner contributed greatly to the unparalleled success of Bayern and West Germany in the 1970s.

He is just one of four players to score in two World Cup finals, and has also scored three more in the 1974 World Cup.

Although he moved to midfield in the final stages of his career, he was largely a defender and got most of his goals from depth.

Breitner scored most of his goals for Bayern and had ten of his goals for his country.

7: Steve Bruce (113)

The Englishman was keen to get on the scoreboard, especially for Manchester United, but also added a bit of a midfield to Gillingham, Norwich, Birmingham and Sheffield United.

His most famous goals came against Sheffield on Wednesday in the 1992/93 season when he made two appearances to give Sir Alex Ferguson his first title in 26 years.

His best season came in 1990/91 for the Red Devils, when he scored 19 goals in all competitions.

6: Sergio Ramos – 128 goals

No defender in world football right now gets more than a Real Madrid captain, and the most amazing thing is he does it at crucial times as well.

He filled three times for his first Sevilla club before joining Real in 2005, and has now become a terrifying goalie – who has seen several double – digit seasons from midfield!

And he scored against Atalanta on Tuesday to put Real Madrid in full control of the Champions League last-16 tie, bringing his club and his country up to 128 incredible goals.

5: Graham Alexander (130)

The Scot has been the backbone of many clubs over the years including Burnley, Scunthorpe, Luton and Preston North End.

He was on kick-spot duties and many of his goals came from penalties, but his impressive ability also popped up from goals in open play as a backup.

Surprisingly, he never got on the Scottish scoring page.

4: Laurent Blanc (153)

Surprisingly, the former France boss still holds the record for a goal at the club he started playing football with: Montpelier.

Blanc began his career as an attacking midfielder before returning to play as a sweeper, scoring 80 goals in eight years with the club – with many coming from set pieces.

The former Paris Saint-Germain manager also scored 16 goals for France, with his most famous as the Golden Goal winner against Paraguay in his country ‘s last 16 World Cup tie.

3: Fernando Hierro (163)

Hierro cemented his place as one of Spain and Real Madrid ‘s top players with the ability to score goals.

He was a captain on both sides and took penalties and free-kicks adding to his high position.

But it also showed an incredible aerial presence at corners and many have said Real Madrid have never found a real place for their former captain.

He also won the Premier League for Bolton Wanderers.

2: Daniel Passarella (175)

Arguably the best defender ever in South America, the Argentine had incredible potential in terms of goals.

Many said short players should not be good on defense, but at 5ft 8pm, Passarella was pretty quiet for the thinkers.

Were it not for the attack on players like Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi, he would shout that the Argentinian is best to wear the famous blue and white shirt.

He captained his country to World Cup glory in 1978 and was also part of the squad they won in 1986.

1: Ronald Koeman (253)

The Dutchman holds the title of most defender ever, although he also played in midfield.

Making a name as a sweeper, the former Barcelona player boasts a record that many strikers would dream of.

He once scored 26 goals in one season for PSV and was also the center of Barcelona in his time with the Catalan giants, scoring 19 goals twice in two different seasons for the Blaugrana.

It should come as no surprise that Koeman took free kicks and penalties – and his most important strike was his free-kick against Sampdoria who won the first ever European Cup in 1992 at Wembley.
