Sean Penn slows nonprofit employees into complaining online about vaccine site

Sean Penn has written a 2,000-word sarcastic email to employees of his nonprofit organization that helps run the COVID-19 vaccine site at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles after two complain online about their lunches and work long hours.

The 60-year-old has been fired by staff from his nonprofit CORE (Community Organized Relief Attempt) over complaints that surfaced in a New York Times article last week regarding the spread of the vaccine at Dodger Stadium.

In an email, received by the LA Times, Penn suggested that those who were ‘prone to a culture of protest’ and ‘widespread cyber whining’ should stop.

He accused those who said they were involved in a ‘widespread betrayal of all’ and described the ‘visible’ comments as ‘disgraceful entries’ and ‘obscene critics’.

These comments were made by people who claim to be workers at the Dodger vaccine site.

The first idea, written by ‘staff # 2’, raised issues with staff getting the same ‘old lettuce packs’ for lunch every day.

‘We do NOT get krispy kreme for breakfast. Of course, we don’t usually have breakfast, just coffee. And the underground pool is NOT. It’s the same old lettuce pack every day. It’s a free lunch for staff / volunteers so I’m not complaining but still … I’m not underground, ’the man wrote.

In the second opinion, written by ‘CORE employees’, there were complaints about working ‘18 days an hour, 6 days a week ’without any backing.

It is because the mayor ordered that we move from a test site to a vaccination site within a week. If we had more time to move, our staff would not work these hours without the opportunity to rest – they are registrars and are vital to the function of the site.

‘Without them, we wouldn’t be vaccinated. The mayor ordered more or less OSHA violations. There is a shipping machine on site which is a designated place for overworked workers to enter. If you don’t let go of this shipping machine, it’s because workers are crying inside. Garcetti created these conditions and looks like a hero for it. ‘

Mara Buxbaum, a representative for CORE and Penn, disputed the long hours, saying they worked eight-hour shifts and are paid by the hour.

‘Penn’ s internal memo to staff speaks for itself, ‘she said.

The vaccination site is run by the city of Los Angeles in partnership with the LA Fire Department, the Dodgers, Curative and nonprofit Penn.

It’s unclear how many of Penn’s employees make up the group at the Dodger vaccine site. It is also unclear whether the two who reported the first story are CORE employees.

Penn received the COVID-19 vaccine last month as he and his charity staff are helping administer the doses.

Its nonprofit began offering free COVID-19 test sites last year at the time of the pandemic.

Penn’s email described the comments left by his employees as ‘a disagreement in a cyber-hanging product’.

‘Whoever wrote these, will understand that every cell of my body is vitriol for the way your actions appear so harmful to your brothers and sisters in their arms. I have taken advice and here I will stop using the words with which I would choose to describe the character of your actions, ‘he wrote.

He said CORE has ‘strong grievance procedures’ for staff and anyone planning to make a grievance online should stop.

‘Leave for CORE. Leave your colleagues unattended. Leave for your peers who deeply recognize that this is time. A moment of service that we all have to bring in sometimes to fall time, ’he wrote.
