Scientists have a good idea of what dinosaurs looked like, they can make things look like scales, feathers or horns for example. But what they have not been able to discover and describe in detail is the backbone of these prehistoric creatures. Yes, we mean buttholes.
But these are not just buttholes, these are cloacae, or vents, aptly described as the “Swiss Army knife of buttholes,” by Science warning. Used for breeding, defecating, and urinating, these fins are found in the spine and are actually multi-purpose.

Thanks to these scientists, we now have a detailed description of a non-bird dinosaur cloak. Even though some animals today, such as birds, amphibians, reptiles, and some mammals have cloacae, little was known about dinosaur cloacae – until now.
“I noticed the cloak several years ago after we reconstructed the color patterns of this dinosaur using amazing fossils on display at the Senckenberg Museum in Germany that clearly preserve its skin and its color pattern, ” explained palaeobiologist Jakob Vinther University of Bristol.
So Vinther and his team decided to compare the fossil cloak with modern ones. The team was only able to gather information about the exterior of the fossil cloak, as the interior was not properly preserved.
Dr. Diane Kelly, an expert on vertebrate penises and copulatory systems from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, who also worked on the study, said, “In fact, they are very unpredictable. We found that the vent looks inter- differs in many different groups of tetrapods., but usually does not tell you much about animal species. “
Nevertheless, the exterior of the cloak was able to provide reasonable information about the “vent” appearance of the dinosaur, and how it was used. The team discovered that the cloak dino was different from living creatures, however, it is similar to those of crocodile reptiles, such as crocodiles and crocodiles.
One interesting thing the researchers noticed was that the outer edges of the dino’s cloak were full of pigment with melanin, which means it may have been used as a signaling system, similar to baboons today.
As Robert Nicholls, a colleague working on the study and paleoartist, said, “Knowing that at least some dinosaurs were signing to each other gives palaeoartists inspiring freedom to consider a whole mix of interactions that are now plausible at dinosaur courtship. It’s a game- changer! “
