‘Concerns’

Scientists, in a study yet to be published by Cambridge University and the National Institute for Health Research, said the new E484K conversion was “worrying” and called for changes in the vaccines to counter new changes. Professor Ravi Gupta, who is the lead author of the study, warned that the existing vaccines against mumps may not work. Gupta also said the vaccination must be stopped to reduce the spread.

The new mutation has been detected in 11 samples from Bristol and 32 from Liverpool to date. Health authorities fear there could be more cases in the country.
