Samsung ISOCELL GN2 – 50 megapixel sensor with Dual Pixel Pro technology

ISOCELL GN2 Photo Sensor (Samsung Source)

Samsung has announced ISOCELL GN2, The company’s second generation GN sensor, which comes in 1 / 1.12-inch and 50-megapixel resolution, which for the first time combines Samsung’s enhanced Dual Pixel Pro technology and uses 1.4μm (micro-meter) pixels with the option to take photos 100 megapixel size.

The new GN2 sensor comes as a sequel to Samsung’s previous ISOCELL GN1 sensor, as it blends 4 neighboring pixels into a single pixel for results similar to a 2.8μm pixel, with higher sensitivity in low light. The Dual Pixel technology from the previous sensor is upgraded to the Dual Pixel Pro, which is being used for the first time in the new sensor. It enables faster phase detection and autofocus by using two photodiodes for each pixel, arranged vertically and balanced for better shooting results.

While a 50-megapixel sensor, the GN2 has the ability to take 100-megapixel images by shooting 3 separate images in green, red and blue at 50 megapixels and smartly combining them. On the video side, the new sensor will be able to support Full HD shooting at 480 frames per second or 4K at 120 frames per second.

The new ISOCELL GN2 sensor is currently in mass production, and may reach the company’s next Galaxy A models, but it is currently unknown on which device it will be available.

While the GN2 sensor comes as a 50-megapixel sensor, the fact that it can deliver 100-megapixel images, similar to the HM1, HM2, HM3 and HMX sensors, gives it added value for the consumer. We will probably be able to find Samsung’s new Dual Pixel Pro technology in other photo sensors below as well, with all that remains to be seen is on which device the GN2 sensor will arrive for the first time.
