SEOUL, South Korea, March 22, 2021 / PRNewswire / – After the unveiling of ‘Adaptive Frequency’ low-power OLED display technology on a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 smartphone late last year, Samsung Display said it sees more interest from other global manufacturers for these power-saving display panels, which are well-suited for 5G phones.

OPPO, the largest smartphone maker in China, the first Chinese smartphone maker to adopt the Adaptive Guard technology. OPPO’s new lineup, the ‘Find X3’, features a Samsung Display OLED panel with an update rating * that varies depending on the application in use. OPPO said it sees the overall power consumption of its flagship phone cut by as much as 46 percent.

Samsung Display Adaptive Watch technology reduces power consumption by automatically changing the display refresh rate for the application in use at any given time. For example, the variable refresh rate allows an OLED panel to reach 120Hz when playing a fast moving game, 60Hz while streaming film, and 30Hz or less when playing email or texting. Additionally, it can allow refresh rate below 10Hz when the smartphone user is looking at still images and other images. This incredible flexibility can greatly reduce the amount of energy consumed each day.

As telecommunications, telephone-connected family interactions and 5G smartphone use continue to grow, more and more smartphone manufacturers are considering Samsung Display’s low-power OLED display technology to meet the huge demand for flagship smartphones with power.

In addition to the way OPPO uses Adaptive Frequency technology, Samsung Display has also provided a 6.7-inch panel showcasing the technology to Oneplus for the new ‘Oneplus 9 Pro’ phone. Oneplus smartphones are attracting a lot of attention in the US and in key emerging markets, for delivering different power-saving performance.

“Samsung Display’s innovative low-power OLED technology is expected to enable the Oneplus 9 Pro a number of reasonable battery-saving options and a more environmentally friendly user experience in the process,” he said. Oliver Zhang, vice president of Product Team at Oneplus.

In addition to OPPO and Oneplus, Samsung Display is in talks with other major global smartphone manufacturers to promote the low-power OLED displays. This includes developing low-power products and making better use of more powerful technologies such as when reducing display cycles.

A Samsung Display spokesman said, “Over the past several years, our priority has been to bring the best image quality and the most innovative designs to our OLED display panels. But moving forward, we will also lead the place of low – power OLED technology, as we upgrade other aspects of the panels, in dedicating them to the most user – friendly displays around the world. “
