(Reuters) – Peter Sagan, the triple world champion will side with the Tour de France over the Olympics if he is made to choose between the two major events of the 2021 season, Slovakia said on Sunday.

Reports have said athletes could quarantine ahead of the Tokyo Games, and with the Tour ending less than a week before the scheduled road race, cyclists could face a difficult choice.

“We’ll see what’s going to happen this year. I can’t decide, we don’t know yet. But if I have to choose … I’ll definitely go out for (the Tour de France) green jersey again, ”said Sagan, speaking from the Bora-Hansgrohe team training camp near Garda Lago Di, the Italy.

“But nobody knows what’s going to happen. ”

Sagan has won the top seven green jerseys for points sorting on the Tour de France.

It failed last year, however, after the cycling season went through a four-and-a-half-month hiatus amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The 30-year-old Sagan, one of the most talented riders of his generation, won three world competitive road race titles in 2015-17.
