Rory McIlroy’s weekend off after a long run of making the cut ends at the Genesis Invitational.
The Northern Irishman had not missed a cut from the Open Championship at Royal Portrush in 2019 and this was his 31st event since.
He also held the record for the longest climb of consecutive cuts currently made on the PGA Tour but that mark ended at 25 events, a distance far shorter than Tiger Woods ’full-time record of 142 tournaments. .
McIlroy admitted he had struggled to put holes on the fast and tough lawns at Riviera Country Club after handing a card to two more than 73 in Thursday ‘s opening round.
The No. 7 world, who had not finished outside the top 21 in his previous nine rounds, would have had better hopes when he escaped on the 10th early Friday morning.

After two opening pars, he made three buttons for a bogey at the 12th before kicking back by a 20-footer yoke for a birdie at the 13th.

McIlroy’s playing partner, Bryson DeChambeau, is expected to have a free Saturday and Sunday after adding 69 to his 75 openings.

The U.S. Open champion had a good face of nine with three birdies but at two more he was two outside the projected cut-off mark after finishing.
Justin Thomas struggled to 77 on Thursday and didn’t make a miraculous return from the No. 3 world as he signed 73 to finish one behind McIlroy on eight overs.
