Riz Ahmed named at the 2021 Oscars
On March 15, Riz Ahmed was nominated for Academy Awards for his role as Ruben Stone in Metal sound. He was the first Muslim ever named in the Oscars Best Actor category. In 2017, the actor was also the first Muslim to win an award at the Emmys. In Metal sound, Riz is seen playing Ruben, a drummer who loses his listening abilities. He is part of the metal duo Backgammon with his girlfriend Lou.
They travel around the country when he understands about hearing loss. His doctor recommends avoiding loud noises. However, he avoids the praise and follows his music. As the film unfolds, one realizes that he is addicted to drugs. For his role as Ruben, the actor has submitted several other nominations such as Golden Globe, Spirit award, SAG award and BAFTA for lead actor. He won a Gotham award and several critical accolades.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly the actor said the film’s journey was terribly long. Especially for director Darius Marder who started working on the film almost 13 years ago. He noted that the film was very close to the heart of the director and also to those who worked for the film. He said they were like a family set up for the low budget shoot. At first, they weren’t sure if the audience would like the film.

Riz recently made the film Escape. He was also featured in the film Mogul Mowgli as Zed. Ahmed was also a co-writer of the film. He also took his place at Takai in the Japanese film Weathering with You. He will appear again in a Michael Pearce film Attack with Octavia Spencer, Janina Gavankar, Rory Cochrane and Lucian-River Chauhan.
