Chloe Zhao nominated for Best Director
Chloe Zhao is the first woman of color named in a management department. Also, she and Promising Young Woman director Emerald Fennell are among those rare ‘women’ nominated for Best Director category. In addition, Nomadland’s Chloe Zhao and Minari Lee Issac Chung are marking the first time two Asian artist-led initiatives have been nominated in the Best Picture category.

Viola Davis is the most famous Black actress in Oscar history
Viola Davis ’nomination in the Best Actress category for her role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is highly variable in more ways than one. Naming Youn Yuh-jung
Youn’s 73-year-old performance in Minari impressed many, which resulted in Youn receiving her first Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category, making her the only Korean woman to go nominated for an Oscar!
