Right-wing protesters attacked police in Jerusalem

29 protesters were arrested yesterday (Tuesday) evening, after throwing stones and other objects at police during demonstrations in Jerusalem, which broke out following the death of the late Ahuvia Godfather, during a police chase last week. One of the detainees is suspected of assaulting a detective while arresting another demonstrator. By some demonstrators and slightly injured, and did not need medical attention.

Demonstrators also attacked a vehicle carrying detainees, hurled stones and objects at police (a policeman was wounded in the neck) and blocked the road at the Zacks junction on Bar Lev Boulevard – the main thoroughfare in Jerusalem. At the Bar Ilan junction, the police used a handgun to disperse the demonstrators. Additional demonstrations also took place in various places throughout the country, including Sderot, Kiryat Arba, Yitzhar, Rachelim and Kedumim.

The demonstrations, which have been going on for several days, erupted after Godfather, a resident of Bat Ayin in the Binyamin region, was killed when his vehicle overturned during a police chase after he and his friends were suspected of throwing stones at Palestinian vehicles.

The protesters claim that the police used excessive force in the incident, and even a mobile that participated in the chase hit the vehicle in which a godfather was sitting and in fact caused an accident that led to his death. In addition, the protesters accuse the police of abandoning a godfather on the ground and rendering the investigation. The police, for their part, reject the allegations, claiming that their wild driving, they claim, was what led to the tragic result of the chase.

Also tonight, the Palestinians report, as every evening since the death of their beloved son Godfather, that there are roadblocks and violence by Israeli civilians against Palestinians in various parts along Road 60. Roadblocks and stone throwing occur at the following intersections: Yitzhar, Kedumim, Deir Sharaf, Shiloh, Givat Assaf, and Gush Etzion.
