Researchers perform first “long-range” teleportation first

A team of researchers say they achieved long-range stable quantum teleportation for the first time.

The research could provide the basis for a “viable quantum internet – a network in which information stored in qubits is shared over long distances through engagement” that could “shape -change the areas of data storage, precision sensing and computing, ”according to Fermilab’s statement.

The team – a collaboration between Fermilab of the U.S. Department of Energy, University of Calgary, and other partners – managed to teleport qubits of photons over 44 kilometers of fiber.

The process does not involve teleportation in the traditional sense. Quantum teleportation is the movement of quantum states from one place to another. Through quantum engagement, two bases in different locations are connected by an invisible force, known as Albert Einstein as a “spouting action at a distance”.

Regardless of the distance, the encoded information shared by the “linked” pair of grains can be passed between them.

By sharing these quantum qubits, the basic units of quantum computing, researchers hope to create networks of quantum computers capable of sharing information at high-speed speeds.

“This is a move towards easier scaling of such systems in different locations, to build a larger system,” said Christoph Simon, professor of physics at the University of Calgary and co-author of the accompanying study. published in the Corporate Review magazine earlier this month, he said in a university statement on the research.

But it has been very difficult to keep this information stable over long distances. The previous world record was held by researchers at the University of Calgary, covering a distance of just six kilometers, as VICE reports.

Researchers now hope to expand such a system, using both intercept to send quantum information and memory for storage as well.

In July, the U.S. Department of Energy unveiled a plan for its first quantum internet, connecting several of its national labs across the country.
