Red Bull has been awarded a contract to take over the running of Honda engines when the Japanese company leaves Formula 1 at the end of this year.

Announcing the creation of their own engine division, Red Bull Powertrains Limited, the new company will run the engines for both Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri from 2022 until the start of the new F1 engine era, which is set to start in 2025.

The moves come after F1 agreed to freeze engine development at the end of this season.

“This agreement represents an important step for Red Bull in its Formula 1 journey,” said team leader Christian Horner.

“We were disappointed when Honda decided to leave the sport as an engine manufacturer, as our relationship was an immediate success, but we are grateful for their support in enabling this new agreement.

“Honda has invested heavily in hybrid technology to ensure the supply of competitive power units to both teams. We are now beginning work on the introduction of the power unit division and the introduction of new facilities and staff into our Technology Environment.

“In the meantime, we are fully focused on achieving the best results in Honda’s last season as an official power unit supplier.”
