11.30: Lunch – England 355 for 3 (Root 156 *, Stokes 63 *)

92 runs unbeaten in the session for England. It wasn’t easy enough, though, with several half-chances for India and some sudden signs of life in this park. Several balls kicked terribly out of the rough or slipped through, while the Stokes attack was not without danger, by any means.

Root only added 28 runs to his score overnight this morning, though that was enough to make it to the seventh player to make 150+ scores in three consecutive Tests and to ensure his average over 50 after these innings even though he will be fired.

11.20am: Out of control

Nadeem and Sundar have been struggling for control all over this India. It’s a difficult situation for Kohli, as he’ll be well aware that Bumrah, Ishant and Ashwin all come back after being injured, so he doesn’t want to use them too much. , but his hand was forced by England ‘s attack against archers of change.

The combined numbers – 39-3-156-0 – are a reflection that they have released too many boundaries (22 fours and sixes apart). As Kevin Pietersen said yesterday, Kohli would love to have Jadeja, who has an economy level in Home Tests over his career just 2.24 runs over. That kind of parsimony would have been invaluable.
