9.20am: Circulation position

England, of course, have made four changes to a winning team, partly due to injury but also because of preconceived notions about rest and rotation. This is Stuart Broad, back in the side to replace James Anderson, as he prepares after sitting the last two tests: “[It’s gone] as would be expected, it ‘s been almost a month since I got any sort of matchmaking practice, but you have to get what you get in nets but that’s just part of the current situation we’re in. We saw how well Indian mattresses came out in Australia after there was not much game use and we are in a similar boat today but we have good facilities to train on, run full in the nets and I feel as ready as can be. It is very difficult to reproduce a matching position in the nets, you just need to increase your density as much as you can. That’s where knowledge is [comes in], I’ve played a lot of cricket, I can fall back on experience and feel relaxed at the brand realizing I’ve been there before. “

9am: India win the toss, make three changes

Hello and welcome to Chennai II: Repayment. That, at least, is the script Virat Kohli is working from – and after winning the toss and selecting for bats, he should be in control of conditions on what is expected to be a much livelier route. India has debated Axar Patel, whose absence through injury last week had a lasting impact on the rest of the XI. With a proper Patel, they have recalled Kuldeep Yadav for the first time in two years, while Mohammed Siraj replaces Jasprit Bumrah, who is resting after bowling 42 overs in his first test on home soil. England had announced their XII on the eve of the game, with Stuart Broad, Ben Foakes and Moeen Ali all coming in. The final spot came down to Olly Stone’s pace against Chris Woakes ’experience (and batting), with Stone getting the nod. He will play his second Test, after facing Ireland at Lord in 2019.
