A breakdown of the DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5 seems to have entered a number of features that contribute to the issue of motion blur.

First, some context: The PS5 has been launched just months ago, but it didn’t seem to take long before gamers I started reciting stick movement problems. Now, Sony is facing a class action lawsuit related to the problem. Diving into the technical activity of a DualSense controller, the repair people will be at iFixit he identified several issues that may be contributing to the problem. But interestingly, the biggest one seems to be that the potentiometers in the DualSense joysticks will definitely fail.

IFixit identified the maker of the joystick models in the DualSense – and other controllers from several other hardware manufacturers – as a Japanese electronics company and Alpine Alps components. Naming the Alps spec page for joystick potentiometers, iFixit found that the company lists the operating life of 2,000,000 rings on their RKJXV series.

According to iFixit, after measuring the controller interaction of one of its own engineers, that could mean that someone playing for two hours each day could start to experience get issues in as little as 4 to 7 months depending on the game. IFixit noted, however, that potentiometers may fail before or after that window.

Throwing to the joystick potentiometers may be the only contributing factor to drift, however. IFixit noted that plastic stretching, pressure on the spring gear that helps position the joystick, and accumulated grime with normal use can also add to the problem. Anyway, the complicated process to deal with these issues – especially without solder tools – is a problem.

Sony did not immediately return a request for comment on iFixit’s decisions or the lawsuit related to its warranty agreements.

The class action complaint involving the PS5’s DualSense controller was filed last week in U.S. District Court for New York’s Southern District. The main accusation in the complaint that Sony has been and has been aware of the issue, which is the result of “thousands” of consumer complaints. It also focuses on what it frames as a hard-core customer support process and costs for customers that Sony does not give money back.

“Even for warranty repairs for Drift, customers have to pay to send the controller to Sony’s repair center – a cost that varies based on a number of factors, including total space and weight. package – and Sony does not reimburse customers for these shipping costs, ”the complaint states. “As a result of Sony’s unfair, misleading, and / or misleading business practices, owners of DualSense Controllers, including Plaintiff, have lost, found, injured and otherwise been injury to Sony behavior. ”
