Purim in the Shadow of the Plague: A Collection of Halachic Instructions from the Rishon LeZion by Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef

Parashat Zachor

As is well known, there is an obligation from the Torah to read in the coming Shabbat in the Torah scroll Parshas Zachor at ten. Due to the situation, it is correct to organize the publication of a Torah scroll after desalination, for additional quorums, and in each quorum they will recite Parshas Zachor without a blessing before and after it. [ורק במניין הראשון שבתפלה מברכים לפניה ולאחריה ומפטירין כנהוג]. And it is also possible to take out S’t in the afternoon during the entire Sabbath, and divide the congregation into separate quorums.

2. Teens on Shabbat Remember

Adolescents – less than the age of 16 who are not vaccinated or recovering, an effort should be made to arrange separate quorums for them to read Parshas Zachor, thus avoiding endangering the adults.

3. Parshat Pera

Parashat Pera – the above should be followed in the case of Parashat Zachor, that is, on Shabbat 22 Adar Divide the masses into quorums, to prevent a large crowd.

4. Women on Shabbat Remember

Women – this year should not get worse and come to hear Parshas Zachor, in order to avoid gatherings, rely on the great arbitrators who believe that women are exempt from hearing Parshas Zachor. And the women who used to hear Parshas Zachor every year do not need to be warned that they will not hear Parshas Zachor this year.

5. Children on Shabbat Remember

Children – up to the age of 13 are exempt this year from reading Parshas ‘Zachor’ and will be educated to read Parshas Zachor from home.

6. Megillah Bible

Megillah Bible – it is mandatory to hear the reading of the Megillah from a parchment and it is not helpful to hear the reading of the Megillah by radio programming ZOOM Etc. And in order to get everyone out by duty, additional quorums will be organized, in order to reduce as much as possible the gatherings on Purim night and the next day on Purim day. As well as those who read the scroll for women, will organize a special reading for women according to the rules and as detailed above.

7. Purim meal

Purim meal – held on Friday, and in Jerusalem on Sunday, the meal should be held in as small a nuclear family circle as possible. And explain to the rest of the family that due to the situation in the world, it is a halakhic obligation for us not to gather in large numbers.

8. Packet delivery

Purim – [בכל הארץ ביום שישי, ובירושלים ולוד ביום ראשון], One should be content mainly with halakhah, to give two portions to two people. And not to increase the delivery of packages as they do in other years.

Vaccination – and on this occasion I reiterate my call to the general public to get vaccinated as soon as possible, and not to listen to those who confuse the public and take responsibility in matters of mindfulness, against Daat Torah and contrary to Halacha.
