A New York state district attorney has obtained Donald Trump’s tax slips and other financial records.
After a lengthy court battle, a Manhattan district lawyer is in possession of Donald’s taxes and other financial records as part of a criminal investigation into the former president and his family-run Trump group, an argument for the -office confirmed Thursday.
The New York prosecutor’s office obtained the voluminous records Monday, the same day the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Trump’s latest attempt to keep his longtime accounting firm, Mazars USA, from turning over the records .
Danny Frost, a consideration for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, confirmed that the office obtained the documents, which came about 18 months after a subpoena was issued for them.
The records, which include eight years of taxation, could spur the district lawyer’s investigation into the Trump Group.
Unlike all other U.S. presidents recently, Trump refused to publicly disclose his tax accounts. The data could provide details about his wealth and the family’s real estate company’s activities.
Comment for Mazars USA did not immediately respond to a request for comment. On Monday, following the Supreme Court ruling, Trump issued a statement calling for Vance’s investigation as part of the “biggest political witch hunt in our country’s history”.
Vance subpoenaed Mazars in 2019 seeking Trump’s physical and personal tax results from 2011 to 2018. Trump’s lawyers have called for a ban on the subpoena, arguing that a presidential president has complete protection from state criminal investigations.
The Supreme Court in July rejected those arguments but said Trump could raise other objections. Trump’s lawyers then told lower courts that the subpoena was too broad and a political harassment but the lower courts rejected those claims last year.
Vance’s investigation initially focused on hush money paid by former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen before the 2016 election for adult film actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal. The two women said they met Trump, whom he denied.
In court films, Vance later suggested that the probe had expanded and could focus on potential bank, tax and insurance fraud, as well as falsification of business records.
Vance’s receipt of the documents does not mean that they will be public.
The New York Times obtained some of the records and reported last year that Trump had paid $ 750 in federal income taxes in both 2016 and 2017, and no income taxes. into 10 of the previous 15 years. Trump has objected to the Times report.
