Police and federal authorities are investigating after a Wisconsin health system said a worker admitted deliberately spoiling 500 doses of coronavirus vaccine
GRAFTON, Wis. – Police and federal authorities are investigating after the Wisconsin health system said an employee admitted deliberately spoiling 500 doses of coronavirus vaccine.
Aurora Medical Center initially said the doses were spoiled Saturday, saying they were left unattended overnight by an employee at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton. The health system said Wednesday that doses of vaccines now appear to have been deliberately spoiled.
Police in Grafton, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Milwaukee, said in a statement that the department, FBI and the Food and Drug Administration are “actively” investigating the case. Police said they were notified of the alleged blockade on Wednesday night. Police said Thursday morning that no further information would be released immediately, and declined to say whether any people were arrested.
In a statement late Wednesday, Aurora said the employee involved “admitted that they deliberately took the vaccine out of cooling. ”
Aurora said he has fired the employee and referred the matter to the authorities. The statement said nothing about a possible reason for the action.
“We still believe that the vaccine is our way out of the pandemic. We are disappointed that there will be a delay of over 500 people receiving their vaccinations as a result of this person’s actions, ”the statement said.
Aurora said it would provide more details Thursday.
