The American PGA has moved the 2022 PGA Championship from the Trump National course at Bedminster, days after Donald Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol.

American PGA president Jim Richerson did not specifically mention the riots in Washington DC, but said that grabbing one of the four golf majors at a New Jersey course would damage the group’s brand.

Bedminster, based in New Jersey, won the contest in 2012, before Trump ran for presidency.

Richerson said: “It has become clear that hosting Trump Bedminster’s PGA Tournament would damage the American PGA brand, jeopardize PGA’s ability to deliver many of our programs and the longevity of our maintain intentions.

“So our board has decided to exercise our right to terminate the contract to host the 2022 PGA Championship at Trump Bedminster. “

In response to the news with the American PGA, the Trump Group said: “We have had a beautiful partnership with the American PGA and we are extremely disappointed with their decision,” a statement read said.

“This is a breach of a binding contract and they have no right to terminate the agreement.

“As an organization we have invested many, millions of dollars in the 2022 PGA Tournament at Trump National Golf Club, Bedminster.”
