EA has permanently removed 18-year-old FIFA player Patrick O’Brien from Ireland after sending racist messages and expressions towards the former footballer Ian Wright. The young player played online in Ultimate Team mode with Wright’s icon card in the game, and after losing, he moved to the Instagram network and sent about 20 messages to the former Arsenal star, where he wished for his death and expressed himself in a racist and abusive manner towards him.
The incident took place during last May, and since then O’Brien has apologized and escaped a painful sentence following the prosecution of a former footballer. The judge noted that O’Brien had expressed remorse for his actions, and had to pay about 500 euros to an association that fights racism in Ireland. The judge also accepted the young actor’s lawyers’ claims when they claimed that “the blood went to his head” and since he never got involved with the law enforcement authorities, he does not pose a danger.

Wright referred to the court’s decision and tweeted about it, where he noted that he was “disappointed” with the court’s decision, and that it was not a move designed to take revenge on O’Brien, but only to teach him to deal with the consequences of his actions.
At this point EA entered the picture, and after deciding to intervene it permanently deleted the accounts of the young player. David Jackson, Deputy CEO of the FIFA Department at EA provided the following response:
“We really appreciate the partnership and support with Ian Wright, and we want him to know that we also support and support him. The incident that happened last year in which Ian was verbally and racistly attacked after a player who lost to FIFA is not acceptable under any circumstances, and we will not accept or tolerate it.
Our scale of ethics is what guides our actions, and we have taken steps that will prevent the player from accessing board games. “Racism must stop, and we will continue to work to provide a fair and safe gaming experience for all communities.”

Wright commented on EA’s case and steps in his podcast: “EA apologized to me, and it was weird. I told them they should not apologize to me, but they said that because it happened on their platform – the responsibility lies with them.”
Over the past year EA has been taking cases of cyberbullying and racism very seriously and has started fighting the phenomenon in its games. In addition, the company has expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement, donating more than $ 1 million to organizations fighting racism in the United States.
Not in the streets, courts, or cages. There’s #NoRoomForRacism, anywhere.
