PC cases catch fire, responsible company finally apologizes

There have been complaints for a few months now that one of the products of PC case company NZXT has been catching fire. This week, the company has apologized and taken the matter out of their store.

The issues were related to their H1 case, which is basically a big box similar to the Xbox Series X. Mar OC3D report, “the screws on the Riser H1 PCIe Card appear to cause a short circuit, causing sparks to fly, smoking to generate and burning on a PCIe H1 riser card.”

One owner was able to record the short walk taking place, followed by flames.

After initially failing the issue when it was reported last year, then proceeded to set up a semi-assed settlement that included the filing of the case. -excluding some metal screws for some nylon, NZXT has finally – largely due to growing pressure from PC hardware sites – given a statement on their company’s site and took they are more decisive steps to do this right.

That statement reads (weight mine):

For our community,

We’re sorry.

Nylon screws were not the complete solution for H1 fire hazard; they did not address the main cause of the case. We did not report situations where someone might unknowingly replace the nylon screws with metal ones. Our execution was not as good as the community we expected from it.

We remove the H1 from the NZXT store and NZXT BLD. We are going to release redesigned Gen3 Riser PCIe Assemblies for custom H1s and we are going to help with installation for those who need.

Going forward, we are establishing stronger and deeper design processes. From the initial designs, QA, to additional testing, we are committed to quality in both our products and our response to your concerns.

We want to thank Steve from Nexus Gamers. He and his team brought the question of someone replacing the nylon screw with metal screws to our attention and they lifted the urgency surrounding it.
