Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes winning trophies will help convince players like Paul Pogba that they still have a future at Manchester United.

Pogba has won just two major trophies since reaching Old Trafford, lifting the League Cup and Europa League during his first campaign in 2016-17 under Jose Mourinho.

But he has since struggled to settle within United’s first team and has led his substitute Mino Raiola to say he will leave the club soon.

Solskjaer although he believes the midfielder can still play at United and that the French midfielder could be prevented from leaving the Red Devils for a second time if the club starts challenging for more consistent major honors.

‘Manchester United are always in demand here to win awards,’ Solskjaer told ESPN. ‘And the more we win prizes, the more the players want to play for us – then the higher you have to set yourself.

‘It’s a demand for the players, a challenge for the players that we want them to develop and get better and better.

‘Paul has been here now for a while and, of course, he wants to win more prizes. He has a great view of training and playing football.

‘He loves football, he’ s ambitious, he wants to succeed – like most of the rest of the squad. We are not all the same.

‘I would say this squad has really impressed me with their recent attitude and spirit and the way they go about their work.

‘Of course, it’s up to us to win awards and then we’ll see who will be part of the team going forward.’

United are back in action on Wednesday night as they look to reach the semi-finals of the League Cup when they visit Everton.

Last season, Solskjaer ‘s side reached the last four of the competition as well as the FA Cup and Europa League but did not win any as they finished the season without a cup.

The United manager believes his team has grown stronger mentally though from experience and has challenged his side to go ahead now and start reaching finals.

‘We were disappointed we didn’t make it to the finals or lift a trophy [last season], but that ‘s the next step for those players now,’ said Solskjaer.

‘I think everyone felt so close to us and the feeling, the spirit and the culture has evolved since then. And the credit. Certainly the credit has grown. ‘
