Online symptom testers can lead to delayed treatment for severe cases: a study

Online symptom testers in the US and UK sometimes prevent patients from seeking prompt treatment for serious illnesses, according to a study published on March 9 in BMJ Health & Care Informatics.

Researchers analyzed the ability of online symptom testers with national government support to properly test people who need a medical assessment and / or treatment. The tools they researched were CDC Coronavirus Symptom Checker, Singapore COVID-19 Symptom Checker, Stop COVID-19 Symptom Checker (Japan), and 111 COVID-19 Symptom Checker (UK).

The research team was trying to find out if symptom analysts could correctly differentiate sweets from COVID-19 side effects, and if they could identify symptoms that resemble symptoms. COVID-19, such as bacterial pneumonia and sepsis.

The study found that U.S. and UK machines consistently failed symptoms of COVID-19 infection, bacterial overgrowth and sepsis and urged patients with these conditions to stay at home.

He also found the devices from Singapore and Japan trying twice as many cases for direct medical assessment compared to US and UK machines. Singapore’s symptom tester had the highest overall referral rate at 88 per cent, while the US had the lowest at 38 per cent.
