On this day in 2014: Stan Wawrinka completed Novak Djokovic’s Australian Open run

Stanislas Wawrinka completed Novak Djokovic’s 25-game run at the Australian Open on this day in 2014.

As the clock ticking to four hours of game time, Djokovic added a volley of width to Wawrinka’s first game point to a 2-6 6-4 6-2 3-6 3-7 9- 7 to Switzerland.

Djokovic was bidding to be the first Roy Emerson to win four Australian Open titles, and had not lost a game since the US Open final in September 2013.

It was the first loss for Djokovic under new coach Boris Becker then, and he completed a successful climb of 28 matches on tour – and 25 matches over three years in Melbourne.

As a result Wawrinka reached its second major semi-final and completed an eight-year, 14-game losing streak against Djokovic.

He went on to win the competition, defeating Rafael Nadal 6–3 6–2 3–6 6–3 in the final to win his first grand slam title.
