Official Account: Tunisia Revolution Cost 129 Life

The Tunisian government finally fined an official tax of 129 dead and 634 wounded in the 2011 uprising, in which an independent group called a “strong sign” of a democratic movement.

The tally, long sought after by the families of victims, was unveiled late Friday on the eve of the 65th anniversary of Tunisian independence.

“It is recognized by the state of the sacrifices made by the people for the fall of a dictatorship” the late president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, leader of an independent association for the “martyrs and wounded” of the revolution, the Abderrazak Kilani’s law, he told AFP.

He said the publication of the list is clearing the way for about 1,500 people who claim to have been wrongly excluded from submitting applications to the authorities.

A starting charge of 338 deaths and 2,147 injuries in 2012.

The official list covers the period of anti-government demonstrations that led to clashes with security forces between 17 December 2010 and 14 January 2011 when Ben Ali fled abroad.

The return of Ben Ali-era figures is seen to have hampered efforts towards justice and reconciliation in Tunisia.

Dozens of cases opened before special courts in 2018, including several about the killing of protesters, but no conclusions were reached.

The next step is to compensate victims and their families, Kilani stressed.
