“Obviously, the Nets stink”: Brooklyn absorbs fire

Beginning of an article

The dramatic 122: 123 victory of Washington in Brooklyn tonight (between Sunday and Monday) may raise hopes among the Israeli audience, but in the same breath raises quite a few question marks among the Hunts fans. And like the Hunts fans, the media are also wondering what is not working so far in the glittering project of Steve Nash, Mike D’Antoni, Amara Studmeier and friends.

“Just ten minutes ago we talked about the Nets as a contender for the championship, and now we’re talking about them after a home loss to Washington,” joked athlete Joe Wardon of Athletic in a column titled “Obviously the Nets stink.”

“There’s nothing fun about losing four out of five games,” Vardon continued. “Either get a defensive ‘burn’ night after night. Either lose so many balls. Or lose a versatile and unappreciated five-man player like Spencer Dinwidi all season. That’s where the Nets are. They have Durant and Kyrie, and they’re both hot, and the team is still 3-4. “Places below the playoffs. Of course, the fact that they both got a shot in the closing seconds and missed indicates a lot of luck for Washington.”

And the numbers – look surprised – back up Vardon’s remarks: Only six teams in the league lose more than the 16.6 losses of the Hunts, who recorded 20 of those tonight compared to seven of the Wizards. But it is not the losses that are decisive, but what happened after them. Those 20 losses led to 23 easy points for Washington, who also took 23 more shots and enjoyed a “slight” 4:17 advantage in second-chance shots. And if that wasn’t enough, Dinwidi’s intended replacement, Charis Lebert, may have impressed for a moment – but it also gave Nash quite a headache with 3 of 13 from the field.

According to Nash after the game, he recognizes a recurring pattern in losses. Too many losses, softness under the ring and taking hard shots. “It’s to feel a little bit of tension and discomfort,” the Nets coach added. “We need to feel comfortable in our uncomfortable areas, and that’s the feeling now, but it’s going to help us grow. We can not lose our heads now or be overly frustrated. We’re new, we have a rookie coach, new players, it’s a bunch that’s never played together”.

Kyrie Irving added: “The puzzle will not be put together overnight, I also do not expect it, nor will I be frustrated after six games or how many we have not played. The goal of the regular season is to get better and prepare for the 16 playoffs – I’m just going to enjoy it.”
