Three Norwegian health workers who recently received the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19 are being treated in hospital for bleeding, blood clots and a low blood count, Norwegian health authorities said Saturday.
Norway halted on Thursday when that vaccine was released, following a similar move by Denmark. Iceland followed suit.
“We don’t know if the cases are related to the vaccine,” said Sigurd Hortemo, a senior doctor at the Norwegian Pharmaceutical Group at a news conference held with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
All three were under the age of 50.
The European medical regulator EMA would investigate all three incidents, Hortemo said.
“They have very unusual symptoms: swelling, blood clots and a low number of blood clots,” Steinar Madsen, Medical Director at the Norwegian Pharmaceutical Agency told the broadcaster NRK.
“They are very ill … We will take this very seriously,” he said, adding that authorities had been notified of the cases on Saturday.
AstraZeneca was not immediately available for comment.
Before moving to Denmark and Norway, Austria stopped using a batch of AstraZeneca images while investigating deaths from coagulation disorders and illness from lung embolism.
However, the EMA said Thursday that the benefits of the vaccine outweighed its risks and could continue.
Europe is struggling to accelerate vaccine distribution following delivery delays from Pfizer and AstraZeneca, even as a spike in cases amid a variety of more infectious viruses that have triggered new locks in countries such as Italy and France.
