‘No timeline’ for gun control legislation despite Biden push

The White House on Tuesday backed down Joe Biden’s push for gun control legislation, saying it was the president’s ‘personal’ priority but saying a package is not ready for Congress.

‘There is no fear of standing by the NRA. It’s been done several times, ’White House news secretary Jen Psaki said of Biden.

However, she noted, there is no timeline for changing gun laws.

‘It’s a priority for him on a personal level, but I don’t have a forecast for you, or a preview for you on a package timeline, and certainly not what it will look like and how it will go through Congress,’ she said at her daily press conference.

On Sunday, Biden used the three-year anniversary of the Parkland shooting in Florida to call on Congress to strengthen gun laws, including calling for background checks on gun sales and banning assault weapons.

We owe it to everyone we have lost and to all who are left mourning to make a change. Now is the time to act, ‘he said in a statement.

It is not clear what steps Congress could or would take even with Democratic discipline. Opposition to gun control remains fierce among proponents of the second amendment.

But Biden said the activity could not wait.

‘This administration will not wait for the next major fire to heed that call,’ the president said.

The admitted school shooter Nikolas Cruz, then 19, was armed with an AR-15 style rifle and fired between 100 and 150 rounds in a rampage that killed 14 students and three adult employees. at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Cruz is still awaiting trial.

Biden said Congress must also remove protections for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets. ‘

Cruz was able to legally purchase the assault rifle, despite known mental health problems.

Even in a country that has grown exponentially in terms of massive arson and gun violence, the Florida arson has sparked uproar across the U.S. and sparked new demands for gun control.

But with Donald Trump in the White House and Republicans in control of the Senate at the time, legislation passed by Democrats in the House of Representatives is no longer passed.

Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday that the House would try again.

‘We will implement these and other life-saving bills and deliver the progress that the Parkland community and the American people deserve and want,’ she said in a statement.

Despite the fact that censuses are getting most Americans for support of some sort of reform of gun law, successful U.S. administrations have been unable to pass legislation.
