Nketiah admits to Arsenal’s playing time worries after being named England U21 captain

The Gunners striker has been having a difficult time with his club but hopes that more responsibility with his country can invigorate him.

Eddie Nketiah has admitted concerns about his playing time under Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, after being named captain for England’s campaign at the European Under-21 Championships.

Aidy Boothroyd ‘s side will take on Switzerland on Thursday ahead of matches against Croatia and Portugal in a difficult group for the competition in Slovenia.

Arsenal No 9 has been a key player for Boothroyd and became a top scorer at this stage during the last international break, surpassing a record held by Alan Shearer. However, there are now concerns about fitness in the game after failing in Arteta’s last six league mother teams ahead of the tournament.

What did he say?

Nketiah, 21, is proud to be captain of the Young Lions and has a platform to prove himself.

“It’s been a difficult month for me. I haven’t played as much as I would have liked but I’ve worked hard and stayed dedicated,” he said. “I have a good opportunity in front of me and Aidy was communicating throughout.

“I have a lot of competition ahead of me and I’m grateful for the opportunity to achieve something special. It is a great honor to even represent your country in a major competition, never to be a captain.

“It’s great to have that responsibility and I’m proud of it. I’m looking forward to getting on the pitch and adding something special. I was overjoyed, smiling [when told by Boothroyd]. I’m grateful for the opportunity and the responsibility he gave me. “

What does his manager think?

“Eddie Nketiah is my captain,” said Boothroyd ahead of the tournament, where England are expected to be champions to win.

“Eddie is one of our management team. He is the key scorer for the U21s which is a great achievement when you consider that he defeated Alan Shearer to the previous record.

“He’s an understanding, humble and hardworking man. That’s even before he talks about football. He’s just a man that everyone loves and respects. He’s a great man, so I thought it was the right choice. “

What is Nketiah’s position at Arsenal?

The youngster has just 15 months left on his current contract in north London and has a great summer ahead of him.

Similarly, the Gunners see Alexandre Lacazette ‘s contract expiring in June 2022 so they have to decide what to do about renewing contracts to take them forward.
