One debate that really separates Nightwing fans is whether it relates to Starfire or Batgirl. While the flexible and familiar puzzle between Nightwing and Starfire in this issue seems to calm the issue, at this point, it is not as clearly cut for the most suitable blocker at DC. While nothing happened between Dick and Barbara over in the Nightwing solo series, the closeness and lack of references to Starfire suggest that Dick is currently keeping his options open. Far from a cameo though, Barbara seems to play a big part in the Nightwing series, meaning there will be a huge focus on their relationship. There is also the fact that Nightwing and Batgirl were recently married in the pages of the Dark Knights: Metal Death, making the issue deeper.

Nightwing Academy and Starfire Teen Titans

Unfortunately for fans of Teen Titan’s best couple, all of this leaves Nightwing and Starfire’s relationship in a strange place. While a vast divided universe lacks strength, they often have similar problems. Between the Nightwing solo series and his appearance in Teen Titans Academy, it feels like there are two different Nightwings. Neither series mentions the other, and it’s hard to see where Nightwing finds time to teach classes while also defending Blüdhaven. Just like Nightwing’s love life, nothing comes of it.

While there are reasons to be skeptical about the future of Nightwing with Starfire, there are at least a few optimistic eyes. Teen Titans Academy one of DC’s first titles to feature the 2003 animated series that the team described for a whole generation. The migration of Red X to the main sequel and the teacher line is very appealing to fans of that show. Robin and Starfire’s relationship was a key element of both characters in that sequel, so it makes sense to translate here. Whatever happens in the future Titans for teens stories however, fans Nightwing and Starfire he should enjoy DC’s greatest romantic return for as long as he lives.
