Health officials in Australia on Monday said they had confirmed two cases of a new series of COVID-19 that are spreading faster than previous mutations.
Reuters reported that New South Wales chief health officer Kerry Chant confirmed six new cases of COVID-19 across the state on Monday, including two believed to be the new strain, which was spread quickly and forced British authorities to shut down this weekend ‘s Christmas shopping season.
Officials confirmed “a couple of UK travelers returned with the special mutations,” Chant said, adding that no issue is thought to be circulating in the community.
“Everyone who comes from the UK enters 14 days of hotel quarantine and is not at any risk, because that quarantine works so successfully,” said Australia’s chief health officer Paul Kelly.
The news that the strain reached Australia came just two days after UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned residents about the dangers of the new snort and measures taken to close businesses and ‘restriction of collections.

“This news from the UK seems to be about a new strain of the virus that is more volatile, more contagious than the virus we’ve seen before,” he said. “While it appears to be more mobile, we still do not have evidence that this is a more deadly virus for anyone who gets it.”
