New Orleans Pelicans send JJ Redick to Dallas Mavericks

The New Orleans Pelicans agreed to trade JJ Redick to the Dallas Mavericks, avoiding a potential buyout for the old firing guard.

Sources told ESPN that the Pelicans sent Redick and forward Nicolo Melli to Dallas to field James Johnson and Wes Iwundu in addition to the 2021 election in the second round.

Redick has not played since March 3 because he is dealing with a right heel injury. Following the All-Star break, Redick went through a non-surgical procedure on the injury and has not been with the team since.

The 36-year-old is shooting 36.4% at career level from the 3-point range this season, but a lot of that has to be done with an unusually slow start. Redick shot 29.8% in the first 16 games of the season but has shot 46.4% in the 15 games since.

Redick has $ 13 million left on a two-year contract he signed for New Orleans in 2019.

New Orleans hit the market for a potential deal for Redick and avoided a situation where Redick would have hit the buying market by making a last-minute deal before hit the date.

Melli, who has struggled to shoot this year for the Pelicans, is in the final year of his contract.

Johnson in the final year of his contract pays him $ 15.8 million and gives the Pelicans depth in front court behind Steven Adams, Jaxson Hayes and Willy Hernangomez, while Iwundu gives another option for the Pelicans on the wing.
