New coronavirus cases in China are doubling, mostly in the Hebei region

BEIJING (Reuters) – Mainland China reported 69 new COVID-19 cases on Jan. 9, more than double the 33 cases reported the day before, the country’s national health authority said Sunday.

The National Health Commission said in its daily journal that 21 of the new cases had been admitted.

The majority of cases transferred locally, 46 out of 48, were in Hebei, the province around Beijing that went into the “wartime mode” of the this week while battling a new collection of coronavirus diseases.

A further 27 asymptomatic cases were also reported on Jan. 9, down from 38 the previous day. China does not classify those patients, who are infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes the disease but do not yet show any COVID-19 symptoms, as confirmed cases. .

Mainland China has now reported 87,433 confirmed coronavirus cases, with 4,634 dying.
