More people think Boris Johnson should resign as prime minister than think he should continue in office, according to the latest Opinium poll for the Spectator.
The first poll in 2021 found that 43% thought he should resign, while 40% said he should stay as a leader. However, the majority of Conservative voters (87%) believe Johnson should remain as leader, with only 7% believing he should resign. Only 20% thought Keir Starmer should resign as Labor leader, with 52% saying he should remain as leader.
There were also signs of a slight decrease in support for government treatment of coronavirus. Some 72% (+4 on the last poll) think that the government did not act quickly enough, with 42% (+4) thinking that they are certainly not acting fast enough .

The public seems to want to err in warning about Covid ‘s restrictions. More than three in five (64%) said they would prefer “a government that quickly imposes lock-in measures, even if that means measures are taken at times when they do not have to to be ”. Only 25% said they would prefer a “government that tries so hard that they cannot impose lock-in measures, even if that means more decisions are being made later than they would otherwise be ”.
Johnson’s overall licensing numbers have seen a small drop. The proportion now allowing is 37% (down one point from the last poll), and 45% agree (up one point). Government treatment of the virus in general has also fallen slightly. The number who now allow is 31% (-3), and the number who do not agree is 48% (+3). This is the highest number of permits since early November.
Overall, Labor holds a one-point lead on 40% of the vote, with the Conservatives on 39%. The Lib Dems are at 6%, the SNP at 5%, and the Greens at 4%.
