Season three of the program will be about fixing all those breaks – although some may be easier to get back together than others, says Vanessa Rubio, who plays Carmen , mother of Miguel. The young karate star is in a coma when season three falls on Netflix on January 1, and Carmen suddenly becomes Miguel’s guardian.

“I can’t say too much about season three, but we’ll fix everything that’s broken,” Rubio said. “The end of the season was like a full wave. Season three deals with what happened next, including what happens with relationships in which there is a lot of broken trust. ”

One of those relationships is between Carmen and Johnny, sensi Miguel. After some initial suspicion of Carmen’s role, the single mother and father had formed a sweet relationship that was looking forward to something more. They went on their first date before the banging fight that ended season two.

Carmen made it clear in the final that she blamed Johnny for what happened to her son – and she would not easily forgive.

“It’s a great and organic connection that Carmen and Johnny have built. Carmen has been studying him to see how good he is for her son and finds out, ‘Oh, he’ s a full, complex man with problems, ‘” Rubio says. “But Miguel, Carmen and, of course, Rosa [Carmen’s mother] has become a substitute for Johnny’s character. ”

In season three, Carmen monitors Miguel ‘s recovery as he sails life in a wheelchair (though Rubio doesn’t say, Miguel will no doubt be back on the mat before the end the season).

“The life experience of being a caregiver is based on love, and that’s all we have in the end,” Rubio says. “It’s sad, but with love motivating you, you can automatically take on that role.”

Rubio says it has been fun for the team and the team to see what is in great demand on display amid the pandemic. When the sequence to Karate Kid bowed on Netflix over the summer, it remained among the top trend shows for weeks. Last week, Netflix moved up the first look of Cobra Kai, one of the 10 most popular shows this year on the service, before a week.

“It got a new lease of life in 2020 and ended at the right time when we all needed it in quarantine,” Rubio says.

Kai bow on YouTube in 2018, and season three was fired at the end of 2019, so the team has yet to start shooting at the time of the pandemic. Netflix is ​​already updated Cobra Kai for a fourth quarter.
