Microsoft adds password management tool to Microsoft Authenticator

Microsoft is upgrading its 2-step verification app, theMicrosoft Authenticator, And adds the ability to manage the passwords of users on mobile devices, as well as computers that use the company’s new Edge browser, or Google’s Chrome using a dedicated plugin.

Microsoft’s Microsoft Authenticator app was first launched in 2017 as the company’s alternative solution to other 2-step verification (2FA) applications, such as Google Authenticator. In the new version of the application, Microsoft added the option to save and manage passwords in a built-in manner, with the ability to enter the passwords automatically in the appropriate fields on websites and applications on the device, with the passwords stored and synchronized through the user’s Microsoft account.

While originally the Microsoft Authenticator app was intended to be a mobile-only solution for iPhones and Android devices, as part of the new change the company launched a dedicated add-on to Google’s popular Chrome browser called Microsoft Autofill and integrated the new password management mechanism directly into the company’s latest Microsoft Edge browser.

New Password Management in Microsoft Authenticator (Microsoft Source)

Password management tools are a useful solution because they allow you to use different and more complex passwords on different websites and applications, thus strengthening the security on the user’s accounts. While one of the most popular tools currently in use is the Chrome browser password manager, it is limited to the use of the browser itself, making Microsoft’s new upgrade more significant, especially when it can be used on both computers and mobile devices.
