McLaren set a 2021 car launch date for Mercedes-powered MCL35M and Daniel Ricciardo will appear

McLaren will launch their 2021 car on February 15, when Daniel Ricciardo will appear publicly in the colors of his new team for the first time.

With Ricciardo arriving at the team and Mercedes engines returning after seven years, there is reason to hope that the Woking team can build on the form that saw them return to the top three in the Builders Championship for for the first time since 2012 last quarter.

The team fired on their MCL35M in front of staff for the first time on Wednesday. After three years under the power of Renault, McLaren has returned to the power of Mercedes to reunite a relationship that had previously existed for 20 years with great success in racing and title.

The event, where Ricciardo, Lando Norris and the 2021 car will be showcased, will be held at 7pm on Sky Sports F1.

McLaren are the second team to launch their 2021 date. Alfa Romeo is holding an event in Warsaw on February 22nd.

Speaking to the McLaren website this week, production director Piers Thynne said: “While every other team will be carrying most of their car last year into the year this, our conversion to a Mercedes power unit means that this is not the case for us.It has managed to change dramatically and, fundamentally, we have been building a new car.The number of new parts on the MCL35M is about the same as when we built the MCL35.

“The rear of the chassis and the gearbox housing around the engine have changed dramatically to accommodate the new power unit. Changing the power unit dramatically changes the car’s architecture and the way everything is on. packaging, so all form of cooling and piping – whether for water or air – has been changed, along with all electrical equipment and control boxes. “
