‘Ma Rainey,’ ‘Da 5 Bloods,’ ‘One Night in Miami’ puts out the best picture despite other diversity gains

A staggering number of films and names were left off Monday’s list of Academy Award nominees – including several films directed by color people who were overlooked for Best Picture – even as the awards progress with the diversity in the acting and management sectors.

The neglect of the films was all the more remarkable as only eight films were nominated for Best Picture, despite the awards honoring as many as 10 in the past.

Da 5 fuil director Spike Lee was also particularly sculpted from the Best Director race, along with several other aspiring filmmakers like Regina King (One night in Miami) and Aaron Sorkin (The Chicago 7 Test).

Actress Jodie Foster did not win a nomination for her role there Am Mauritanian despite winning the Golden Globe for her painting, and actress Chadwick Boseman later won the nomination Ma Rainey black bottom but not for his work in Da 5 fuil.

Other actors who only watched Zendaya (Calum & Marie), Tom Hanks (Greyhound and World News), Jared Leto (The little things) and Sacha Baron Cohen, nominated for The Chicago 7 Test but no Borat Moviefilm after that.

Netflix’s Mank led the pack with 10 nominations, but the film didn’t pick up nominations for best screenshot.

Although expected names like King and Sorkin have been left out of the Best Director list, Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg has been unexpectedly named in the category for the film. Another visit, the director said on Monday, “I’m really surprised.”

The Academy Awards were announced Monday ahead of a concert on April 25, to be held both at the former Dolby Theater and at Los Angeles Union Station. The Oscars, previously criticized for their lack of diversity, made big strides with their acting and management departments this year. Nine historicly colored actresses were honored in the acting categories – with this being the first year the Best White Actor category is mostly white – and 70 women won 76 nominations, a record for the awards. Two female directors were nominated in the Best Director category for the first time, as well as two directors of Asian descent, and Nomadland director Chloe Zhao could be the first woman of color to win the leadership award if she wins. Midari Actor Steven Yuen was the first Asian-American actor ever nominated for the Best Actor award and Riz Ahmed (The sound of metal) first Muslim-American, and Yuh-Jung Youn, Yuen’s Midari co-star, also the first ever Korean actress named in an acting category with her Best Supporting Actress nod, according to Variety.

The Academy’s neglect of a number of diverse films from their Best Picture category could be corrected in the coming years, as the awards body has announced new diversity rules which will come into force in 2022. filmmaking in 2022 and 2023 submit a confidential Academy Inclusion Standards form for a film to be nominated for Best Picture, and starting in 2024, films looking for the category must meet to specific diversity criteria in terms of how many players, creators and color members are involved.
