Lunar sleep levels affect human sleep, menstrual cycle, two new studies find- Technology News, Firstpost

Perhaps there is something scientific that we thought was the old stories of women, and which was dismissed as old superstition. Two new studies have found a link between lunar levels and our human sleep and menstrual cycles. The latest research published in the magazine Advances in science has shown that, a few days before a full moon, people tend to go to bed late and sleep for less time. It has been believed and considered for years that light, natural (sunlight or moonlight) and artificial, are in some way related to people’s sleep patterns. Before artificial light was created, the moon was the only source of light when the sun was setting.

Human sleep, menstrual cycle is influenced by phases of the moon, two new studies have found

The researchers found that sleep starts later and is shorter on the nights before the full moon.

To understand this, the team used wrist probes to establish the relationship between nighttime sleep and the lunar cycle. For the study, they selected different participants who lived in rural and urban areas to find out if the environment also plays a role.

According to a report by The Keeper, The sleep patterns of 98 people were monitored and they lived in three different types of communities in Argentina. One was a rural community with no access to electricity, the other was a rural community with limited electricity access and the third was in an urban setting with full access to electricity.

Surprisingly, all three communities showed the same pattern of sleep oscillations during the lunar cycle. Sleep time varied from about 20 to 90 minutes, and bed times varied from 30 to 80 minutes during the 29.5-day daily cycles of the natural satellite. The study concludes that human sleep was synchronized with the lunar cycle, regardless of ethnic and socio-cultural background.

Another study was conducted and published in the magazine Advances in science showed that there is a connection between a person’s menstrual cycle and the lunar cycles. While this is not uncommon for other animals, the idea that even human beings are under the influence of the moon was controversial, at least. The one thing that is even more surprising is that, since artificial lights were used at night, the synchronous nature of our times, with the lunar cycle, is lost however that may have frozen up to age.

For this study, the menstrual data of 22 women over the past 32 years were analyzed. The average data was 15 years and the information came from women who were both older and younger than 35 years. Women who had menstrual cycles lasting longer than 27 days reportedly showed “occasional synchronization with cycles that affect the intensity of moonlight.”
