Justin Herbert overcame the game-winning touchdown in overtime as the Los Angeles Chargers dealt a tough blow to Las Vegas Raiders playoff hopes with a 30-27 victory Thursday night.

Herbert was impressive throughout, finishing 22 of 32 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns – tying Baker Mayfield’s rookie touchdown record of 27 in the process – and broke into the endzone for the third score on the third and the goal from the one-yard line within the final two minutes of extra time.

  • Chargers passing: Justin Herbert, 22/32, 314 yards, 2 TDs
  • Rush Head: Austin Ekeler, 13 carries, 60 yards
  • Head gets: Jalen Guyton, four catches, 91 yards

He secured a fourth loss in five for the Raiders (7-7), who suffered another blow with the loss of their starting quarterback Derek Carr to a groin injury in the first quarter.

Backup Marcus Mariota – the No. 2 overall pick with the Tennessee Titans in the 2015 draft – excelled in what he did for Las Vegas after his arrival in the offseason. He finished 17 of 28 passes for 226 yards, one touchdown and an interception, while he also ran for 88 yards and a TD on nine carries.

Chargers 30-27 Raiders Justin Herbert ran one-yard TD

Despite his impressive display, Mariota’s appearance looked as if he had won the Chargers, coming within the two-minute warning, with the tied scores at 24-24, setting LA with good field position at the Raiders 33-yard line.

However, the Chargers, who had their deadly fault this season on late costly mistakes to lose one-score games, went on their lines again, with Herbert taking a costly sack on the third and second – the eight-yard loss that made it harder to hit a 51-yard field goal – and Michael Badgley, who also missed a 47-yard kick on their previous series, again on his go wrong left.

In extra time, Raiders weaver Daniel Carlson put Las Vegas ahead with a 23-yard goal, but it wasn’t going to be enough as Herbert took control of the game-winning campaign, lifting Jalen Guyton deep with a 53-yard pass to help establish the score he won.

Guyton had four catches for 91 yards and Hunter Henry and Tyron Johnson each got a catch for the Chargers. Keenan Allen, who saw limited action due to a leg injury, grabbed one pass to give the 100-catch mark for the third time in his career.

Raiders tight end Darren Waller had nine tackles for 150 yards and a touchdown in an impressive ride and Josh Jacobs rode for 76 yards and scored 26 carries.
